Cervical Factor Infertility

Cervical factor infertility occurs when the cervical mucus prevents sperm from reaching the egg, often addressed successfully with IUI or IVF.

🔬

Overview

What is Cervical Factor Infertility?

The cervix produces mucus that normally facilitates sperm transport into the uterus around ovulation. When the cervical mucus is hostile, insufficient, or when the cervix has been damaged by surgery or infection, sperm cannot pass through to fertilise the egg — causing cervical factor infertility.

Bypassing the Cervix

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) at Iswarya Fertility places washed, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus, completely bypassing the cervix. For more severe cases, IVF fertilises the egg outside the body, eliminating cervical involvement entirely.

Symptoms

Inability to conceive despite regular intercourse
History of cervical surgery (LLETZ, cone biopsy)
Post-coital test showing no motile sperm in cervical mucus
Recurrent cervical infections
Abnormal cervical mucus on examination

Causes

1
Anti-sperm antibodies in cervical mucus
2
Cervical stenosis from prior surgery or procedures
3
Chronic cervicitis (cervical infection)
4
Inadequate oestrogen causing poor mucus production

How It's Diagnosed

Post-coital test (PCT) 2–12 hours after intercourse
Cervical mucus assessment around ovulation
Anti-sperm antibody testing
