What is Hyperprolactinemia?

Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast milk production. When prolactin is elevated outside of pregnancy and breastfeeding, it suppresses GnRH and subsequently LH and FSH — hormones essential for ovulation. The result is irregular or absent periods and infertility.
