Oligospermia (Low Sperm Count)

Oligospermia is a sperm count below 16 million per mL, reducing the chances of natural conception but treatable with IUI or ICSI-IVF.

📊

Overview

What is Oligospermia?

Oligospermia refers to a sperm concentration below the World Health Organisation reference threshold of 16 million sperm per millilitre. Fewer sperm means a lower probability of fertilisation. Severe oligospermia (<5 million/mL) usually requires ICSI (directly injecting a single sperm into an egg), while mild-to-moderate cases may respond to IUI.

Treatment at Iswarya Fertility

Our andrologists investigate the underlying cause, prescribe medical therapy where applicable, and recommend the most appropriate ART procedure — from IUI with sperm washing to ICSI — based on the degree of oligospermia and partner's fertility status.

Symptoms

Inability to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse
Semen analysis showing sperm count below 16 million/mL
Possible scrotal pain or swelling if varicocele is the cause
