Retrograde Ejaculation

Retrograde ejaculation causes semen to enter the bladder instead of exiting through the penis, but sperm can be retrieved from urine for IUI or IVF.

Overview

What is Retrograde Ejaculation?

During normal ejaculation, the bladder neck closes to direct semen outward. In retrograde ejaculation, this muscle fails to close, causing all or part of the semen to flow backward into the bladder. Men with this condition may notice cloudy urine after orgasm and produce little or no ejaculate.

Sperm Retrieval from Urine

At Iswarya Fertility, sperm can be successfully retrieved from post-ejaculatory urine after alkalinisation of the bladder, then processed and used for IUI or ICSI. Medical therapy with sympathomimetic drugs (e.g., pseudoephedrine) can also restore antegrade ejaculation in some patients.
