Patient guide
Emotional Wellbeing During Fertility Treatment
Fertility treatment is emotionally demanding. This guide covers coping strategies, how to support your relationship, and when to seek additional help.
What You May Feel โ and Why It is Normal
Research shows that the psychological stress of infertility is comparable to a cancer diagnosis. Common emotions include grief, anxiety, guilt, anger, isolation, and alternating hope and despair.
Coping Strategies
For Your Mind
- Mindfulness meditation: Even 10 minutes daily reduces cortisol. Apps: Headspace, Calm, Insight Timer
- Journaling: Write without editing โ process emotions on paper
- Limit social media: Muting pregnancy announcements is self-care, not avoidance
For Your Relationship
- Schedule no-IVF-talk time: designate evenings where treatment is off-limits
- Physical affection without pressure โ reconnect without agenda
- Allow different coping styles: partners grieve differently; neither way is wrong
- Attend appointments together when possible
What NOT to Say to Someone Going Through IVF
- โ "Just relax and it will happen"
- โ "At least you can try again"
- โ "Have you thought about adoption?"
- โ "I'm here for you"
- โ "What do you need from me today?"
