IVF Patient Preparation Guide
Everything you need to know before starting your IVF journey โ from initial consultation to egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
Before You Begin
Starting IVF can feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through every step so you feel prepared and confident.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
- Bring all previous investigations (semen analysis, HSG, AMH, FSH)
- List all current medications
- Discuss your medical history honestly
Step 2: Baseline Investigations
- Day 2โ3 hormone panel (FSH, LH, AMH, E2, Prolactin, TSH)
- Antral follicle count (AFC) by transvaginal ultrasound
- Partner: semen analysis and morphology
Step 3: Ovarian Stimulation (Days 2โ12)
- Self-injection training will be provided by our nurse coordinator
- Injections are given daily, typically in the evening
- Regular monitoring scans every 2โ3 days
- Stay hydrated; avoid strenuous exercise
Step 4: Egg Retrieval Day
- Fast for 6 hours before procedure
- Arrange transport home โ you cannot drive
- Light sedation/anaesthesia used; procedure takes 20โ30 minutes
Step 5: Embryo Transfer
- Bladder should be comfortably full
- Procedure takes 10 minutes
- Begin progesterone supplementation as prescribed
- Pregnancy test 14 days after transfer
Tips for Success
- Take folic acid 400 mcg daily
- Sleep 7โ8 hours per night
- Reduce caffeine to <200 mg/day
- Avoid alcohol and smoking completely
