A quick X-ray procedure to check if your fallopian tubes are open and your uterus is normal. One of the most important first-line tests for female infertility.
Whether the tubes are open (patent) or blocked, and where any blockage is located (proximal or distal).
Whether the uterine cavity is normal or has abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, adhesions, or a uterine septum.
Dilation of the fallopian tubes (hydrosalpinx) which can reduce IVF success rates if untreated.
Confirming tubal ligation reversal success or checking for abnormalities after uterine surgery.
When to have it
HSG is typically done on days 7–10 of your menstrual cycle (after bleeding stops but before ovulation).
Preparation
Take a painkiller 30–60 minutes before. You may be given antibiotics to prevent infection. No fasting required.
The procedure
You lie on an X-ray table. A speculum is inserted, a thin catheter passed through the cervix, and contrast dye injected. X-ray images are taken as the dye flows through the uterus and tubes. Takes 15–30 minutes total.
After the test
Light spotting and mild cramps are normal for 1–2 days. Results are usually available immediately and discussed by your doctor at a follow-up consultation.
