Egg Retrieval Day: Important Steps and Patient Experiences
For couples undergoing IVF, egg retrieval day is one of the most anticipated and emotional milestones in their fertility journey. It’s the day when eggs are collected from the ovaries, the first real step toward creating embryos.
At Iswarya Fertility Centre, our goal is to make this experience calm, comfortable, and reassuring for every woman. With experienced doctors, advanced embryology labs, and compassionate care, your retrieval day becomes a smooth part of your parenthood journey.
What Is Egg Retrieval?
Egg retrieval (also called oocyte retrieval) is a minor procedure where mature eggs are collected from the ovaries. It is performed about 34–36 hours after the final trigger injection that prepares the eggs for collection.
The retrieved eggs are then fertilized with your partner’s or donor’s sperm in our IVF laboratory to form embryos.
Preparing for Egg Retrieval Day
1. The Final Trigger Injection
Once your follicles reach the right size, your fertility specialist schedules the trigger shot (usually hCG or Lupron). This injection helps the eggs mature before retrieval. Timing is crucial — you’ll be guided exactly when to take it.
2. Fasting and Pre-Procedure Care
You’ll be asked to avoid food and water for 6–8 hours before the procedure since mild sedation or anesthesia will be given.
Avoid perfumes, deodorants, and makeup, as they may interfere with lab air quality.
3. Bring Essential Documents
Carry your ID, consent forms, and any medications you’ve been advised to continue. The team at Iswarya Fertility Centre will handle everything else once you arrive.
What Happens on Egg Retrieval Day?
Step 1: Admission and Pre-Check
You’ll arrive at the centre in the morning. Our nursing team will take your vitals and ensure all your test results are in order.
Step 2: Anesthesia and Comfort
Egg retrieval is done under mild sedation or short general anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the process. It typically takes 15–20 minutes.
Step 3: The Retrieval Procedure
Using a thin needle guided by ultrasound, the fertility doctor gently aspirates the fluid from each follicle in the ovaries. The fluid is immediately handed to the embryologist, who checks it under a microscope to find and collect the eggs.
Step 4: Recovery Time
After the procedure, you’ll rest in a recovery room for about an hour. Mild cramping or bloating is normal, and you’ll be given medications to ease any discomfort.
You can usually go home the same day.
Step 5: Fertilization in the Lab
The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm for fertilization through IVF or ICSI (depending on the case). The resulting embryos are cultured and monitored closely for several days.
What to Expect After Egg Retrieval
Mild Symptoms: Bloating, cramping, or a feeling of fullness for a day or two.
Rest: Take it easy for 24 hours and avoid heavy exercise.
Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to stay comfortable.
Follow-up: Our team will inform you about fertilization results within 24 hours.
Embryo Transfer: Usually happens 3–5 days later if the embryos are ready.
Real Patient Experiences at Iswarya Fertility Centre
Many women feel nervous before their first egg retrieval, but most describe it later as “much easier than expected.”
Here’s what our patients often share:
“The staff made me feel so calm and cared for. I was asleep during the procedure and woke up with no pain.”
“It felt more like a short rest than surgery I was home by noon.”
“Seeing my fertilization report the next day was emotional. It felt like hope had finally arrived.”
Every story is unique, but the emotion is the same relief, hope, and excitement for the next step.
