Infertility Causes and Solutions

17 Nov 2025

Introduction

Infertility is a challenge that affects millions of couples worldwide. Defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse (or 6 months for women over 35), infertility can be caused by a variety of factors in either partner.

At Iswarya Fertility Centre, we understand that infertility can be both emotionally and physically stressful. Our goal is to identify the underlying causes early and provide personalized solutions to help couples achieve their dream of parenthood.

1. Common Causes of Infertility in Women

Female infertility can result from hormonal, structural, or age-related factors:

a. Ovulation Disorders

Irregular or absent ovulation is a leading cause of female infertility. Conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or hormonal imbalances can prevent eggs from maturing or being released.

b. Age-Related Decline

Fertility naturally declines after age 35 due to reduced egg quantity and quality, making conception more difficult and increasing the risk of miscarriage.

c. Tubal and Uterine Issues

Blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids, or endometriosis can interfere with egg transport or implantation. Tests like HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) and ultrasound help detect these issues.

d. Hormonal Imbalances

Disorders of the thyroid, prolactin, or other reproductive hormones can disrupt ovulation and reduce fertility.

2. Common Causes of Infertility in Men

Male infertility contributes to nearly 40–50% of cases. Factors include:

a. Low Sperm Count (Oligospermia)

Insufficient sperm production can prevent fertilization.

b. Poor Sperm Quality

Sperm motility (movement) and morphology (shape) are crucial for successful fertilization. Poor quality sperm may fail to reach or fertilize the egg.

c. Hormonal Imbalances

Low testosterone or other hormonal issues can reduce sperm production.

d. Lifestyle and Environmental Factors

Smoking, alcohol, obesity, stress, exposure to toxins, and heat can negatively impact sperm health.

3. Combined or Unexplained Infertility

In some cases, infertility may involve both partners or remain unexplained despite testing. Early evaluation helps identify subtle issues and guide treatment effectively.

4. Solutions to Infertility

Modern fertility treatments offer hope to couples facing different challenges:

a. Lifestyle and Medical Interventions

Maintaining a healthy weight

Balanced diet and exercise

Reducing stress and avoiding smoking or alcohol

Hormonal therapy or medications to improve ovulation or sperm production

b. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, improving the chances of fertilization.

c. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

Eggs and sperm are combined in the lab, and resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus. IVF is suitable for conditions like blocked tubes, poor sperm quality, or unexplained infertility.

d. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

A single sperm is injected directly into an egg. ICSI is often used in cases of severe male infertility.

e. Egg or Sperm Donation

For couples facing severe fertility challenges, donor eggs or sperm provide an option to achieve pregnancy.

f. Fertility Preservation

Egg or sperm freezing allows individuals to preserve fertility for future family planning.
