IVF Egg Retrieval Process: What to Expect Before, During, and After
Egg retrieval is one of the critical steps in the IVF journey. Knowing what happens before, during, and after this procedure can help reduce anxiety, ensure preparedness, and promote a smooth recovery.
Before Egg Retrieval: Preparation and Planning
Ovarian Stimulation:
Weeks before retrieval, fertility medications stimulate the ovaries to mature multiple follicles containing eggs. Monitoring via blood tests and ultrasounds tracks follicle growth.
Trigger Injection:
When follicles reach the appropriate size (usually 18-20mm), a final “trigger” injection (HCG or Lupron) matures the eggs in preparation for retrieval, typically given 34-36 hours before the procedure.
Pre-Procedure Instructions:
Patients are advised to fast (no food or water) after midnight before the retrieval day. Comfortable clothing, arranging transportation home, and having a support person are important.
During Egg Retrieval: The Procedure
Anesthesia and Comfort:
Most clinics use intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, ensuring patients are relaxed and pain-free during the 15-30 minute procedure.
Ultrasound Guidance:
A transvaginal ultrasound probe locates the ovaries. A thin needle guided through the vaginal wall punctures each follicle to aspirate the fluid containing eggs.
Egg Collection:
The fluid is immediately handed to the embryology lab, where technicians identify and prepare eggs for fertilization.
Procedure Monitoring:
The physician monitors for any bleeding or complications through ultrasound before concluding the procedure.
After Egg Retrieval: Recovery and Care
Initial Recovery:
Patients spend about an hour in a recovery room where vital signs are monitored. Mild cramping, bloating, or spotting is common.
Pain Management:
Over-the-counter pain relief like acetaminophen is usually sufficient. Severe pain or heavy bleeding should prompt immediate medical attention.
Activity Restrictions:
Rest is recommended for the remainder of the day with light activity resuming the next day. Avoid strenuous exercise and intercourse until advised by your doctor.
Follow-up:
Embryo fertilization progresses in the lab, and patients return for embryo transfer in subsequent cycles.
