Risks & Side Effects of IVF and Fertility Procedures

What are the Risks and Side Effects of IVF and Other Fertility Procedures?

Fertility treatments such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproductive technologies offer hope to millions of couples. While these procedures have enabled many to achieve their dream of parenthood, it is also important to understand the potential risks and side effects physical, emotional, and financial so you can make informed choices and prepare for the journey.

Common Side Effects of Fertility Medications

Fertility treatments often start with medications to stimulate the ovaries or manage hormones. These can include oral drugs (like clomiphene) and injectable gonadotropins.

Mild effects: Bloating, breast tenderness, mild abdominal discomfort, mood swings, hot flashes, headache, and fatigue.

Injection site reactions: Soreness, bruising, or swelling where injectable medicines are used.

Emotional changes: Hormone shifts may heighten mood swings or cause anxiety or irritability.

IVF Procedure Risks

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

Occurs when ovaries over-respond to medication, becoming swollen and painful.

Symptoms: Severe bloating, rapid weight gain, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath.

Usually mild but can be serious and rarely requires hospitalization.

Egg Retrieval Complications

Mild discomfort and cramping are common.

Rare risks: Infection, bleeding, and damage to blood vessels, bowel, or bladder.

Multiple Pregnancy

IVF increases risk of twins or higher-order multiples if more than one embryo is transferred.

Multiple pregnancies pose higher risks: preterm birth, miscarriage, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and cesarean section.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Fertilized egg implants outside the uterus (usually in the fallopian tube), requiring medical attention.

Occurs in 1-2% of IVF pregnancies.

Ovarian Torsion

  • Rarely, overstimulated ovaries can twist, cutting off their blood supply and requiring emergency surgery.

Pregnancy and Birth-Related Risks

Gestational diabetes and high blood pressure: More common in pregnancies conceived with IVF, especially multiples.

Premature birth and low birth weight: Multiples and IVF pregnancies have higher odds of early delivery, increasing risks for newborn health challenges.

Miscarriage: Rates are similar to natural conception (about 15% for women in their 20s, up to 50% for women in their 40s) but increase with maternal age.

Birth defects: Slightly increased risk compared to natural conception, but most IVF babies are healthy. Most risk is related to age and underlying health, not the procedure itself.

Emotional, Financial, and Long-Term Considerations

Emotional stress: The uncertainty, hormonal effects, and possible treatment failures can cause anxiety, sadness, or depression. Psychological support is often valuable throughout the process.

Financial costs: IVF and fertility treatments can be expensive, and often more than one cycle is needed.

Long-term health: Research is ongoing, but current studies have not shown significant risks of long-term health problems with IVF.

Reducing Risks: What Can You Do?

Choose an experienced fertility team and discuss individualized protocols.

Limit the number of embryos transferred to lower multiple pregnancy risk.

Maintain healthy lifestyle habits before and during treatment.

Keep communication open with your care team about all side effects and concerns.
