What Are the Steps in the Egg Donation Cycle?

11 Nov 2025

Introduction

Egg donation has helped countless couples and individuals achieve their dream of parenthood, especially when the woman’s own eggs are not viable. At Iswarya Fertility Centre, we offer a safe, ethical, and transparent egg donation program designed to match donors and recipients for the best possible outcome.

If you’re considering egg donation  either as a donor or recipient, understanding the step-by-step process can help you feel more confident and informed. Let’s break down each stage of the egg donation cycle and what you can expect along the way.

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Counseling

The first step begins with a consultation with the fertility specialist.
Both the intended parents and the donor (if applicable) will;

Undergo medical counseling

Discuss the process, expectations, and emotional aspects

Review legal and ethical guidelines under Indian fertility regulations

At Iswarya Fertility Centre, our counselors ensure both the donor and the recipient clearly understand the process, privacy policies, and success rates before proceeding.

Step 2: Donor Selection and Screening

Choosing the right donor is crucial for a successful outcome. Donors are carefully screened to ensure their health, genetic stability, and fertility potential.

Donor Screening Includes:

Complete medical and fertility evaluation

Hormonal testing (AMH, FSH, LH, etc.)

Genetic and infectious disease screening

Psychological assessment

Lifestyle and family medical history review

Only healthy, qualified donors between 21–30 years of age are accepted. This ensures the eggs are of high quality and safe for fertilization.

Step 3: Synchronization of Donor and Recipient Cycles

To ensure the best timing for embryo transfer, both the donor and the recipient need to have their menstrual cycles synchronized.

How This Is Done:

The donor is given hormonal medications to stimulate egg growth.

The recipient may receive estrogen and progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for embryo implantation.

This synchronization helps match the donor’s ovulation period with the recipient’s uterine readiness, increasing pregnancy chances.

Step 4: Ovarian Stimulation and Monitoring (For Donor)

The donor takes fertility medications for about 10–12 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

During this time, the donor undergoes:

Regular ultrasound scans to monitor follicle growth

Blood hormone tests to check response

Adjustments in medication dosage if needed

Once the eggs are mature, an injection (trigger shot) is given to prepare for retrieval.

Step 5: Egg Retrieval Procedure

The egg retrieval is a minor, painless procedure performed under light anesthesia. Using a fine needle and ultrasound guidance, the eggs are gently collected from the donor’s ovaries.

Key Points:

Takes about 15–20 minutes

No surgical cuts or stitches

Donor can return home the same day after observation

At Iswarya Fertility Centre, strict hygiene and lab protocols ensure the eggs are safely handled for fertilization.

Step 6: Fertilization and Embryo Development

Once the eggs are retrieved, they are immediately fertilized in the IVF lab with the recipient’s partner’s sperm (or donor sperm, if required).

Lab Steps Include:

Fertilization (IVF or ICSI)

Embryo culture for 3–5 days

Selection of the healthiest embryos for transfer

Our embryologists at Iswarya Fertility Centre use advanced techniques to ensure that only high-quality embryos are chosen for implantation.

Step 7: Embryo Transfer to Recipient

The best embryo(s) are transferred into the recipient’s uterus using a simple, painless procedure. No anesthesia is usually required.

After Transfer:

The recipient continues hormonal medications (progesterone support)

Rest and light activity are recommended

A pregnancy test is done after 10–14 days

If successful, the embryo implants, and pregnancy begins naturally.

Step 8: Post-Procedure Care and Follow-Up

After embryo transfer, regular follow-ups help monitor early pregnancy progress and ensure the recipient’s body adjusts well to hormonal changes.

For the donor, post-retrieval check-ups ensure she recovers comfortably and safely. Both parties receive ongoing emotional and medical support from the Iswarya Fertility Centre team.
