What is Egg Freezing? Who Should Consider It? – Iswarya Fertility Centre

What is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing, medically known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation technique where a woman’s eggs are collected, frozen, and stored for future use. This allows women to pause their biological clock and attempt pregnancy at a later stage when they are ready.

As women age, both the number and quality of eggs decline, which can reduce fertility and increase risks of miscarriage or chromosomal abnormalities. By freezing eggs when young and healthy, women increase their chances of conceiving successfully later in life.

How Does Egg Freezing Work?

The process typically involves several steps over 2 to 3 weeks:

1. Consultation and Diagnostic Tests

A fertility specialist assesses ovarian reserve through blood tests and ultrasound to estimate potential egg yield and determine an individualized treatment plan.

2. Ovarian Stimulation

To encourage multiple eggs to mature, you will receive daily hormone injections for around 8-12 days while undergoing regular ultrasound and blood monitoring.

3. Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs have matured, a minor outpatient procedure guided by ultrasound collects the eggs from the ovaries using a thin needle. Sedation ensures comfort during this quick and generally painless procedure.

4. Freezing (Vitrification)

Eggs are rapidly frozen using a special technique called vitrification, which prevents ice crystals and preserves egg integrity for long-term storage.

5. Future Use

When ready to conceive, the eggs are thawed, fertilized with sperm through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), and embryos are transferred into the uterus.

Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing may benefit,

Women delaying childbearing: Pursuing education, career, relationships, or personal readiness.

Women diagnosed with medical conditions: Such as cancer, requiring treatments that may harm fertility.

Women with family history of early menopause or diminished ovarian reserve.

Transgender individuals preparing for hormone therapy or surgeries impacting fertility.

Women wanting fertility insurance: To increase chances of pregnancy at an older age.

The optimal age to freeze eggs is in the late 20s to early 30s, as egg quality is highest during this period. However, freezing at any age is generally better than no preservation if fertility may be threatened.

Benefits and Considerations

Egg freezing empowers reproductive choices and family planning flexibility.

It cannot guarantee a pregnancy but significantly improves future chances compared to unpreserved eggs.

Multiple eggs are usually frozen to increase success rates, meaning more than one pregnancy attempt.

Costs, time, and physical/emotional considerations should be thoughtfully discussed with a specialist.
