Donor Sperm Treatment

When male factor infertility cannot be overcome with the partner's own sperm, donated sperm from a rigorously screened, anonymous donor offers a path to parenthood.

Who May Benefit from Donor Sperm?

Donor IUI vs Donor IVF

Donor IUI

Donor sperm is processed and placed directly into the uterus at ovulation. Minimal preparation, outpatient procedure. Best for straightforward cases.

Best for: Open tubes, good egg reserve, younger age
Approx. cost: ₹15,000–₹30,000 per cycle
Donor IVF

Donor sperm fertilises the intended mother's eggs in the IVF lab. Embryos are cultured and transferred. Higher success rates per cycle than IUI.

Best for: Blocked tubes, older age, failed IUI, lower AMH
Approx. cost: ₹1,20,000–₹1,80,000 per cycle

Donor Sperm — FAQs

How are sperm donors screened?
All sperm donors at licensed sperm banks in India are rigorously screened for infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B & C, syphilis, CMV), genetic conditions (karyotype, cystic fibrosis, thalassaemia), and psychological fitness. Donors are anonymous and must meet age and health criteria set by the ICMR.
Is donor sperm treatment legal in India?
Yes. Donor sperm treatment (donor insemination and donor IVF) is legal in India and regulated by the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 and guidelines from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). All donors are anonymous and sourced from licensed sperm banks.
Can we choose characteristics of the donor?
Most sperm banks allow intended parents to indicate broad preferences such as ethnicity, blood group, and educational background. Exact identity and photos of donors are not disclosed in line with Indian regulations on anonymous donation.
What is the difference between donor IUI and donor IVF?
Donor IUI places donor sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation — a simpler procedure suitable for women with open fallopian tubes and good egg reserve. Donor IVF uses donor sperm to fertilise the intended mother's eggs in the lab — recommended when IUI has failed, tubes are blocked, or egg reserve is lower.
What is the success rate of donor sperm IUI and IVF?
Donor IUI success rates are approximately 15–20% per cycle. Donor IVF (using the intended mother's eggs) achieves success rates comparable to standard IVF — approximately 50–70% per transfer depending on age and embryo quality.
